Karaganda State Medical University or KSMU is the most prestigious medical institution in Kazakhstan. It is the first medical university in the republic. Located in the city Karaganda or Qaraghandy, it was established in 1950. KSMU is officially recognised by the Republic of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Education and Science. It is also recognised by WHO, as well as MCI. The university also has strong ties with the association of medical education in Great Britain, Europe (AMEE), and the World Federation of medical education. The National Accreditation Centre has ranked it 8th amongst 60 leading universities. Its world ranking is 6893 and country rank is 25. The university has several well-designed graduate and postgraduate programs for students as well as professionals. The well-equipped research centre of the university provides a base for the students and professionals to carry out scientific research. Education is imparted in English, as well as Russian. The faculties at the university are Faculty of General Medicine, Faculty of Stomatology, Faculty of Gynaecology, Faculty of Anatomy, Faculty of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Internal Disease, Faculty of Physiology, Faculty of Oncology, Faculty of Neurology, and Faculty of Clinical Department.

Karaganda, also known as Qaraghandy, is the capital city of the Karaganda Region of Kazakhstan. In terms of population, this city stands fourth after Almaty, Nur-Sultan, and Shymkent. It is an industrial city. The climate here is humid continental with very cold winters and warm summers.
